Why was the counseling technology comparison created?
The comparative site was developed by Behavioral Health Innovation while assisting governments, healthcare companies and private practices identify and implement telemental health technologies that fit their specific purposes.
The growing number of requests from consulting clients and mental health providers for information about the merits of different telemental health technologies led to the creation of the Online Counseling Technology Comparison. The comparison site educates professionals about the telemental health technology and service options for private practice, provider networks, enterprises and consumers, in an unbiased manner. Providers can efficiently evaluate all of the current market offerings according to the criteria that best fits their business.
How do you compare such different counseling technologies?
The comparison of online counseling technologies is very difficult because the points of comparison are vast and continually changing. In addition, each point of comparison can be interpreted in multiple ways and have a variety of nuances for different applications or uses. Some of these products/services compared were not created for counseling specifically but have been considered by counselors.
Since each person coming to the site has different criteria in mind, we tried to provide these basic criteria as a means for sorting the technologies. With the assurance that basic criteria are met, each profile can be viewed in more detail.
Where did you get the information compared?
Behavioral Health Innovation initially collected the information from the public websites of each of the counseling technology vendors presented. In an effort to stay current with each technology, we have made formal information requests of all of the companies, using the same questions and supporting information to remove question bias. Vendors have responded to our inquiries by providing answers to our inquiries and text for the profile pages. A few vendors have been concerned about biased results, based on biased comparison falsely created by competitive companies. For vendors who have not responded to our inquiries, BHI has taken public information about the vendors product and attempted to display the vendor’s product in the best light possible on the vendor’s profile page. Once these vendors see our intent, we believe they will participate in the updates. Behavioral Health Innovation will continue to reach out to them in the process of obtaining updates from all of the vendors.
Can a vendor get a preferred listing in the comparison?
No.
How do you ensure fairness in this comparison?
We have taken many steps to remove personal or company bias from this technology comparison. The first way to create fairness is to admit that we all have a bias. Since we have worked for and with many of the technologies evaluated, we have thoughts about the usefulness and appropriateness of these technologies for different uses. At the same time, we believe that each of the technologies can be used for purposes and criteria that are different from ours and we want our clients and constituents to know about the options that meet their criteria (as opposed to ours).
In order to neutralize our personal biases, we have:
- Taken our company’s voice out of the comparison. Behavioral Health Innovation makes no statements about the products and services profiled.
- Used common criteria (provided by counselors and administrators) for the comparison chart.
- Applied the same language to all sites compared in our categories and tags.
- Alphabetized the initial presentation of the products/services (prior to criteria selection).
- Alphabetized the presentation after criteria selection.
- Sent the same survey to all vendors (and all subsequent update requests).
- Included technologies that were not made specifically for counseling, but may still be useful.
- The site has never accepted, and never will accept, any compensation, goods, or promises of any kind in return for providing biased results in the comparison.
